BIBLE STUDY 2: HELPS FOR DAILY LIFE

A SERIES:           THERE IS HOPE

LESSON 16:        Mark 12:13-34   GOD HAS ANSWERS FOR ALL OF LIFE'S QUESTIONS

Mark 12:13-34 (KJV) “13And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, to catch him in his words. 14And when they were come, they say unto him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not? 15Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? Bring me a penny, that I may see it. 16And they brought it. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said unto him, Caesar’s. 17And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s. And they marvelled at him. 18Then come unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying,  19Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man’s brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. 20Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed. 21And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise. 22And the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all the woman died also. 23In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife. 24And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? 25For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven. 26And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? 27He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err. 28And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? 29And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:  30And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. 31And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. 32And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:  33And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. 34And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.”

INTRODUCTION

Marks is the gospel of action. He is just moving right along, step by step. At this particular point the die is cast. The enemies of Jesus have determined whatever it takes, whatever they have to do, they are going to kill Jesus. We need to look very carefully at the things the enemies of Jesus do at this particular point. Beginning with verse 13.

Mark 12:13-15 (KJV) “13And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, to catch him in his words. Bring me a penny, that I may see it.”

This is the first of three questions that were asked Jesus in the verses which we are going to study. All three of these questions were loaded questions and they were designed to trap Jesus in his words. Their purpose is to kill the Lord Jesus. They are going to trump up some charges, find some reason to kill the Lord and so these questions are not really intended to get answers for themselves, but rather they were intended to trap Jesus and to give them an excuse to put Him to death.

Nevertheless, when the Lord Jesus gives the answers to these questions, He gives some answers to questions which are very important to us. Of course, we know the Lord Jesus can always do this. Jesus is the great at answering questions. If you will pay attention, most of the time Jesus will answer a question with another question in return. Jesus is the one who has the ultimate answers to all the questions that we face in life. One of the criticisms some people give today against the church of the Lord Jesus Christ is that we are often answering questions that nobody is asking.

However let me be quick to say to you, that we are answering the questions that people ought to be asking. The great questions of life are answered in the Word of God and by the Christian church. We are answering such question as "What is life all about?" "Is there an eternity?" "What about our existence after death?" "Is there a real Heaven and hell?" "Where do you come from?" "Where are you going?" The Bible has the answer to all of these most important questions in life.

EXPLANATION

THE FIRST QUESTION THE LORD JESUS ANSWERED HERE IS ABOUT LIFE'S AUTHORITIES (POLITICAL)

The Pharisees and the Herodians have come to Jesus. These were natural enemies. They couldn't stand one another. Yet, in their common hatred of the Lord Jesus they have joined together in order to catch him in His Words. The word, “catch,” is the word that was used to describe catching a wild animal. It is like hunters who are after their pray. They are trying to snare Jesus. They are trying to catch Him in these words. They cover their trap in flattery. They cover their trap with the flowers of flattery and try to set Jesus up and say, “Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth.”

Then they pop the question, “Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?” That was one of the burning questions of the day. That was one of the big political questions that was taught frequently and discussed among the people. It is the same thing as the basic church-state relationships we discuss today – the matter of what is the role of the state in a life and what is the role of God in a life. Of course, there were always different groups. The Herodians said that you ought to pay tribute. They took the side of the government and they said, "You ought to pay your taxes and you ought to pay your tribute." On the other hand the Pharisees said, "Not on your life. It would be unfaithfulness and disloyalty to God. You shouldn't do it at all." Therefore, there was a polarization in that day.

Some said you paid tribute to Caesar, others said you did not. Therefore, they brought this question to the Lord Jesus and they are trying to use this to get Jesus in trouble with the people. This particular tax was kind of a poll tax on every individual. If you were an adult in Israel you were required by Roman law to pay this tax once a year. It was a little silver coin about the value of something less than our quarter. It was a source of real irritation to the common people. If they could get Jesus to say that you should pay that tax he would get in trouble with the common people. If they could get Jesus to say you weren't supposed to pay that tax then that would get him in trouble with the Roman government.

THERE IS THE REALM OF GOVERNMENT.

Therefore, they thought they had Jesus between a rock and a hard place at this particular time. Nevertheless, Notice what Jesus does in verse 15: “But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? bring me a penny, (That is that silver coin) that I may see it16And they brought it…” I can almost see them fumbling in their pocket and they get out one of those coins. They hand it over to the Lord Jesus. Jesus took this coin in his strong fingers and then he begins to talk about this coin He says to them in verse 16: “And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?” When they looked at the coin they saw the image of Tiberias Caesar on one side. On the other side they saw superscription which basically assigned qualities of deity to the Roman Emperor. Therefore, they give that coin to the Lord Jesus. “And they said unto him, Caesar’s.” Then Jesus replies to them in verse 17: “And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s…And they marvelled at him.” That is an absolutely brilliant reply. The Lord Jesus Christ just absolutely hits them right where they are. All of these guys had these coins in their pocket. By the very fact that they were using the coinage of Rome, they were admitting Rome did have a legitimate realm in their life.

Therefore, the Lord Jesus was just simply saying to them, you by the very use of these coins have admitted that there is a legitimate role of the government in your life. Of course, this is the principle that the Lord Jesus lays down. It is the principle concerning the authorities of life.

There was and is the right of government to impose certain requirements upon its citizens. It wasn't very thoughtful of the Lord to start talking about taxes at tax season. Here we are in tax season and the Lord Jesus hits us with this command: “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s” Yet, we know this is what the Bible says.

When we go to the 13th chapter of the book of Romans the Bible makes it very clear that the Christian is to be a good citizen. We are to pay our bills. We are to obey the laws of the land. We are to pay our fair portion of taxes. All of these things are taught in the Word of God. We do recognize that government has certain authorities over our life. If we didn't have the state, if we didn't have government, then society would be totally chaotic.

There has to be some kind of guideline upon a society in order for it to function the way it ought to function. I'd be the very first one to admit to you today that sometimes it's very irritating dealing with the government. It can be real irritating trying to handle all the red tape and all of the problems they impose. I was reading the other day about when the volcano at Mt. St. Helens erupted. The government wrote out some guidelines about how to deal with a volcano. In their guidelines they said move away from the volcano, not toward it. Now that's real smart, isn't it? It takes the government to come up with something like that and make it a permanent part of some guidelines in dealing with a volcano.

Sometimes we get a little bit upset because it seems like we pay more taxes than we ought to pay. If our forefathers had problems with taxation without representation, could they have imagined how much worse it is to have taxation with representation. These guys get up there in Washington and it just seems like more taxes and more taxes and all of that. Yet you and I know that we really cannot function apart from some kind of guidelines and directions in government. People everywhere cannot provide their own water supply. We cannot provide our own road system. We do not have the ability to provide our own police protection. Therefore, we receive certain privileges, certain benefits from the government. I am not going to get on the subject of the millions of people who take advantage of the system. That is another study for another day. So, The Lord Jesus says, If we are going to receive the benefits, then we must assume certain responsibilities. “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s”

THERE IS THE REALM OF GOD.

Verse 17 goes on to say, “…and to God the things that are God’s.” Here are two realms of authority in human life. Just as on the coin Caesar's image was inscribed, the Bible says that you and I are made in the image of God. God has created man in his likeness. There is-something about you that is like God. When God made you, He made you a physical body. That's not what's like God.

When God made you he made you with a soul. That's not what's like God. When God made you be made you a spirit and that's what's like God. Jesus said, "God is a Spirit and they who worship Him must worship him in Spirit and in truth." There is something about you that responds to God. There is something about you that relates to God. Therefore, Jesus said, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” You give to the Government what belongs to the government, and then you give to God what is God’s. You have no right to run your life whatsoever. You belong to God. The human spirit has been implanted there by God. Jesus is saying, "The solution is not an either – or, but the solution is a both – and.” Therefore, Jesus answers the political question.

THE SECOND QUESTION THE LORD JESUS ANSWERED HERE IS ABOUT LIFE'S REALITIES (DOCTRINAL)

Verse 18 says, 18Then come unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection…” That just wraps it up for us right there. That's what the Sadducees were. There were basically anti-super naturalists. In other words they didn't believe in the supernatural world. They didn't believe in the spiritual world. The Sadducees were not a very large group in Jewish society.

The Pharisees were the largest and most respected of the religious orders. The Sadducees were relatively small. They were the wealthy, aristocratic class of the people. Most of the high priests came from the Sadducees. They were what we might call the rationalists or the liberals of the day. They didn't believe in angels. They didn't believe in the spirit world. They didn't believe there was a resurrection. They had concocted a little story they told in order to make folks who did believe in resurrection look silly and foolish.

Notice what they do in verse 19, “…and they asked him, saying, 19Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man’s brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. ” That's in Deuteronomy 25:5. That was old levirate marriage. This was a means devised in Jewish law whereby if a man died his family line could be maintained. It also made possible that family property could remain in the same family. That was the law. They took that little thing and then they told this story.

Their story went like this in verse 20: “Now, there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed. 21And the second took her, (One of the brothers took the wife) and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise. 22And the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all the woman died also. 23In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife. ”

They take this law which was familiar among the Jewish people and they tell a ridiculous story to make fun of the resurrection. They say, "Now, Lord, this guy married this wife, but he died and they didn't have any children. Therefore, the brother married her and he died. They didn't have any children. Then the third, the fourth. Looks like one of those guys would have gotten suspicious of her cooking. Seven of them died. There are no children. Then the Sadducees said, "In the resurrection whose-wife is she going to be?"

They stand back and look at those Pharisees and giggle and grin when the Pharisees couldn't answer that question. Actually what the Sadducees are doing is this: They are making light of life and death issues. They are making perky little problems and lighthearted little stories out of matters that are extremely important to people. They are talking about life. They are talking about death and they are talking about the afterlife. Those are issues that everyone of us are interested in. All of us are interested in life and what life is all about. All of us are interested in death and how we are going to cope with the problems of death. The Bible says it is appointed unto man once to die.

The older we get, the more we think about death. Someone says that death is a subject that men spend a lifetime trying not to think about. I look at young people and they don't think a lot about death now, but every year older they get and the longer they live they will think more about death. According to the teaching of the Bible and what we know by personal observation is that death is the inevitable experience of everyone of us. Unless the Lord Jesus Christ comes before your lifespan is lived out, somewhere in the near or far future you are going to have to face death. Everyone of us is one day closer to death than we have ever been before. We are dealing with life and death issues. We are dealing with the inevitability of death. Are we ready to die? We will never really be ready to live until we can say we are ready to die.

Are we prepared to die? Have we faced the prospect of our death? Some might say, "Preacher, I hadn't really given much thought about it. I know other people die. I hadn't thought about me dying." I am here in this Bible Study to say to us all today: It is appointed unto man once to die. Death is inevitable. The Lord Jesus dealt with the matter of death. The Lord Jesus came to grips with this matter of death. Nevertheless, these Sadducees are making light of issues that are very serious and important. Someone said that boys throw rocks at frogs in sport, but frogs don't die-in sport. They die in earnest.

So, these Sadducees, like little boys are throwing rocks at human beings. They are making fun of the crucial issues of life that really get us down there where we think. They really hit us down there where we live. In the resurrection, what's going to happen? That's their question to the Lord Jesus Christ. Friends, we ought to be interested in the afterlife.

President Eisenhower said one time, "I am interested in eternity. I am going to spend the rest of my life there." Have we ever thought about the afterlife? Is there an afterlife? Is there indeed a resurrection? I think one of the reasons Easter is such a big day,  one of the reasons the attendance is so large normally in churches on Easter, is that down in the heart of man there is that desire to know – is there indeed life after death?

When death comes, is that the end of it? When we die, are we going to be just like the dogs that are thrown on the trash pile or buried in a shallow grave? Is it all over? Are we just going to be like animals when death comes? Is there life after death? Job phrased the question quite well when he said: “If a man die shall he live again?” That dad of ours who died a few years ago, will we ever see him again? That dear mother of ours who is the light of your life, died. Will we ever see her again? The Sadducees said, "No. Never. It's all over. When death comes there is no afterlife. When death comes there is no resurrection." They told their silly little story and they stand back to grin and snicker at the Lord Jesus Christ. "In the resurrection, whose wife shall she be?" However, in verse 24 Jesus Christ is not smiling. “And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God?” That's the best definition of a liberal I have ever read. That's what a liberal is. A liberal doesn't know the power of God; neither does he know the word of God. Friends, if you take a-way the power of God and you-take away the Word of God, then there is no resurrection. There is no afterlife.

Jesus said in verse 25: “For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven.” Jesus is saying this: The power of God is going to transform life in the afterlife to an absolutely new and different plane of existence. He is saying that relationship which is so beautiful and so meaningful in life right now is going to be insignificant and unimportant up there in comparison to what God is going to do by his power in the afterlife.

The Bible says that “Eye hath not seen neither ear heard, neither hath it entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for them. God has revealed them unto us by his spirit.” Did you know God gives us just a little glimpse of what His power is able to do? That's just a little glimpse of what God is going to do in the next world. God is going to give His children a wonderful place called heaven in the next world.

What's it going to be like? I really am not sure what it's going to be like. I read what the Bible says. I read the book of Revelation. I read about that next world, I read about heaven and the streets of gold and all of these things, but you know what I think. I think when God revealed to John on the Isle of Patmos what the next world is going to be like and what man would experience up there, I think it was so wonderful and so glorious that language just absolutely broke down and John couldn't begin to describe how wonderful and how glorious it's going to be when the child of God steps through the door of death into that next world. Jesus said it will just be so wonderful you will be like the angels up in heaven. It didn't say you are going to be an angel. You are going to be as the angels.

That is, you are going to be in a new kind of existence. You are going to be in relationships which will so transcend these earthly human relationships that they will be unimportant. Someone may say, "Preacher, will I know my wife in heaven?" Yes, you won’t become stupid when you get to heaven. You will know her and all your loved ones, but there aren't going to be any wedding bells ringing in heaven.

We won't be renting any tuxedos in heaven. Nobody is going to be getting married in heaven. It's going to be a higher plane of relationship. God will do that by His power. Oh, the power of God. I think about the resurrection body. What's the resurrection body going to be like? Jesus had a resurrection body that was able to go through closed doors. One minute he wasn't here, the next minute he was there. He was able to pass through doors. I think we will be able to move with the speed of thought. When you get in that next life, when you get out there in that resurrection world, you'll be able to move with the speed of thought. In other words, you will just think it and there you'll be. It's going to be glorious when we get in that new world.

Jesus is dealing here with a great question--the great question of life after death. Jesus makes his point quite clearly in verse 26 when he says: “And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? ”

When Jesus said in verse 27He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err.” He is saying that the living God is not the God of dead people; but the God of living people. There was Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob – long since dead – yet God refers to them as those who are in conscious existence and as having a relationship with them. When death comes in this world, our relationship to this world and men in this world is changed at that particular point.

Nevertheless, you do not lose your relationship to God. God is the living God. God is the eternal God. When you die you will not lose that relationship to God. When a person is saved, the Bible says they come to be "in Christ." That's Paul's phrase – “in Christ.” Paul, in discussing that relationship to the Lord Jesus, was talking about death. He said “I have a desire to depart and be with Christ.” When you are saved Christ comes to be with you. When you, as a believer, die you go to be with Christ. Therefore, death and the afterlife for the believer is just more of Christ. You just have more of Jesus and more of the fullness of the relationship of Jesus Christ.

There is only one person who can speak to us authoritatively about life after death and that is the Lord Jesus because, Jesus Christ is the only person who ever died, went into the afterlife and came back to this life to explain to us and to describe to us what it is like. Over on the straits of Gibraltar, on the Pillars of Hercules, they had inscribed these Latin words – “nephus ultra” which means nothing more beyond. However, when Columbus made his voyage and discovered the American continent and returned, they scratched out the first two letters “ne” and left only the Latin words – “phus ultra” which means more beyond. When Jesus Christ died on Calvary's cross, was buried in the tomb, and then rose again and for three days and three nights was in the next world and from that tomb came back to speak to men about that other world – He Himself proved that there is – MORE BEYOND! The Lord Jesus is just simply saying to us that THERE IS MORE BEYOND!

One of these days they are going to take this body of mine, embalm it, they are going to put it in a casket, roll it in a church somewhere. Folks are going to come by and somebody is going to say, "Poor old Frank is finally dead." I hope when they do, I can cause a lot of commotion and just raise up and say, "That's a lie." Because this world and the Devil thought I was finished but I will be more alive than I have ever been in my whole life! You can weep because I am not here with you any more if you loved me. However, don’t weep because you think I am dead because I am not dead – I AM ALIVE FOREVER MORE! I will be free at last from the restrictions of this body and everything in this world. Jesus says that the resurrection lies in the power of God and in the Word of God. God has made His promise. He said I'll bring you back from the dead and in His power He can do what His Word has promised He would do. Amen? That's the second question--the doctrinal question.

THE THIRD QUESTION THE LORD JESUS ANSWERED HERE IS ABOUT LIFE'S PRIORITIES (SPIRITUAL)

In verse 28, here is a fellow that seems to be more sincere that all the others and it says, 2And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? ” That was a big question among the Scribes.

The Scribes were the experts in the law. They were the Bible authorities in those days. If you wanted an answer to a Bible question you checked with the Scribes. They had gone so meticulously into all the commandments in the Old Testament that they had isolated in the Pentateuch alone – the 613 commandments of God. Then they had divided those commandments into what they call heavy commandments and light commandments. There were some they had determined that were more significant than others. So, the big question was – what 1 commandment is the greatest commandment of all? They had become the authorities. They could say this is an important commandment, and that is not. They had gone through all of that rigmarole. They had everything so complicated. It's like I heard a fellow say one time about climate change. "These experts are learning more and more about less and less. Pretty soon they will know everything there is to know about nothing." That's the way these guys were. They came to Jesus and this scribe asks, "Which is the first (or greatest) commandment of all?"

In verses 29-31, “And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: 30And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. 31And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. ” Jesus Christ has just taken all the ten commandments of God on the two tablets of stone, and he has brought all of those commandments down to two commandments. He says, the number one priority is to love the Lord thy God. He says, you love him with everything you've got. He says, you love him with your whole being, your mind, your soul and you strength and your – heart. Love him with everything you've got.

Then he said there is another one that comes right alongside of that. “Love your neighbor as yourself.” He is saying that the whole thing is wrapped up in two sentences – love God with everything you've got, and love your neighbor as yourself. People talk a great deal about loving their neighbors as themselves. That's good and we should. Nevertheless, we can't obey the second commandment until we obey the first commandment. We can't love others the way we ought to love others until we love the Lord the way we ought to love the Lord. Can we say in our heart of hearts that we love the Lord with every fiber of our being? To say we love the Lord is one thing, but we show we love the Lord by our actions. We show we love the Lord by the things we do, by the life we live. The Lord wants us to love Him. The Lord longs for us to love Him completely, absolutely and unreservedly.

He is the God of love. He has extended His love to us in the person of his Son, The Lord Jesus. “God commended His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” When we understand that love and respond to that love in faith and receive Jesus into our hearts and into our lives, then the Bible says that “the love of God is spread abroad in our heart through the Holy Spirit.”

When God's love is in our heart we can love other people the way we ought to love them. I don't of a daddy anywhere that doesn't love his children. If there happens to be one who may be a lost man and and has never received Jesus as his Savior – if he will open up his heart to the Lord Jesus and let the love of God pour in and start loving the Lord the way he ought to love the Lord, then he will be capable of loving his children like he has have never loved them before. If there's a wife who has never received Jesus as her personal Savior and she loves her husband – if she would open up her heart to the love of God in the person of the Lord Jesus she would have a capacity to love her  husband as she has never loved him before. Love the Lord. Love your neighbor.

The scribe saw Jesus had answered well the Scripture says. He responds and says to him in verse 32, “And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he.”

In verse 34 when Jesus saw that the man answered discreetly or wisely Jesus looked at that man and said, 34And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.”

Basically Jesus told this scribe, “You have come to understand that God loves you and that you must love Him in return. You are just one step away from the Kingdom of God.” The things we read in the Bible are not just things God has said, but, they are thing that God is saying to us today. As the truths applied then, they apply today to us. GOD HAS ANSWERS FOR ALL OF LIFE’S QUESTIONS. Whether we ask the question or not – THE ANSWER IS JESUS.
