BIBLE STUDY 2: HELPS FOR DAILY LIFE

A SERIES:    THERE IS HOPE

LESSON 18: 2nd Chronicles 20:1-30 WHEN WE DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO

2 Chronicles 20:1-30 (KJV) “1It came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them other beside the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle. 2Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be in Hazazontamar, which is Engedi. 3And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. 4And Judah gathered themselves together, to ask help of the LORD: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD. 5And Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court,  6And said, O LORD God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee? 7Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend forever? 8And they dwelt therein, and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name, saying,  9If, when evil cometh upon us, as the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we stand before this house, and in thy presence, (for thy name is in this house,) and cry unto thee in our affliction, then thou wilt hear and help. 10And now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them, and destroyed them not;  11Behold, I say, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit. 12O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee. 13And all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children. 14Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, came the Spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation; 15And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s. 16To morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel. 17Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them: for the LORD will be with you. 18And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD, worshipping the LORD. 19And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high. 20And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper. 21And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth forever. 22And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten. 23For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another. 24And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped. 25And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in gathering of the spoil, it was so much. 26And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Berachah; for there they blessed the LORD: therefore the name of the same place was called, The valley of Berachah, unto this day. 27Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat in the forefront of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for the LORD had made them to rejoice over their enemies. 28And they came to Jerusalem with psalteries and harps and trumpets unto the house of the LORD. 29And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries, when they had heard that the LORD fought against the enemies of Israel. 30So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet: for his God gave him rest round about.”

INTRODUCTION

The New York State Conservationist News Paper published a list of pointers on what to do if you should become lost in the woods. The fifth and last recommendation reads: "Don't yell, don't run, don't worry, and, above all, don't quit. Better yet-write to the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Washington, D. C., and ask for their pamphlet No. 0-23, 'What to do When Lost in the Woods.' "

I once saw an advertisement about a pub and grill called "Wits End." It was advertised as "The Place to Be!" I'm sure that all of us have found ourselves at our wits end and I don't think any of us would say that it is the place to be. Unfortunately, we all have been at the place where we were at our wits end.

We often feel like the fellow who said that the light at the end of the tunnel turned out to be the headlight of an approaching train.

Another person said one time that he was so depressed that his hands shook so badly he could brush his teeth without any voluntary movement and that he had cried so much his contacts had rusted to his eyeballs.

It may be that things are so bad that we feel like Oscar Levant who said that he was thrown out of a mental hospital for depressing the other patients.

In regards to your job, marriage, children, relationships, church life, ministry, we my all find ourselves at our wits end and we don't know what to do. So, what do you do when you don't know what to do?

2 Chronicles 20 is my favorite story of the Old Testament. It tells of Jehosophat, who was a good and godly king, and what he did when he didn't know what to do. Our attention is drawn especially to verse 12, where we read "O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee."

INTERPRETATION

Jehosophat was at a place we all have frequented. He was at the place of wits end and he didn't know what to do.

PERSPECTIVE OVERSEES THE SITUATION!

There is no denying the fact that Jehosophat was confronted with a serious problem. As the situation came into view, there was only one perspective to oversee it; things were going from bad to worse.

LOOK AT THE BATTLE THEY FACED

(vv. 1-2) "It came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them other beside the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle. 2 Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be in Hazazontamar, which is Engedi."

Jehosophat and his army were faced with an army 3 times the size of their own. They were outnumbered. They were outmatched. They were out manned.

A very small, sickly-looking man was hired as a bartender. The saloon owner gave him a word of warning: "Drop everything and run for your life if ever you hear that Big John is on his way to town." The man worked several months without any problems. Then one day a cowhand rushed in shouting, "Big John is comin'," and knocked the small bartender on the floor in his hurry to get out. Before the bartender had a chance to recover, a giant of a man with a black bushy beard rode into the saloon through the swinging doors on the back of a buffalo, and using a rattlesnake for a whip. The man tore the doors off their hinges, knocked over tables, and flung the snake into the corner. He then took his massive fist and split the bar in half as he asked for a drink. The bartender nervously pushed a bottle at the man. He bit off the top of the bottle with his teeth and downed the contents in one gulp, and turned to leave. Seeing that he wasn't hurting anyone, the bartender asked the man if he would like another drink. "I ain't got no time," the man roared. "Big John is comin' to town."

Jehoshaphat found himself with a huge problem in his life. He probably felt like Big John was coming to town, and he didn't know what to do.

LOOK AT THE BURDEN THEY FELT

(v.3) "And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah." Something that he faced created something that he felt, and something that he feared. (v.4) "And Judah gathered themselves together, to ask help of the LORD: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD." Fear gripped everyone from the palace to the pit, from the prince to the pauper.

Black Bart was a professional thief who terrorized the Wells Fargo state line. From San Francisco to New York City, his name was synonymous with danger. From 1875-1883 he robbed 29 stage coaches and did it all without ever firing a shot. Because a hood hid his face, no one ever saw him. He never took a hostage, but used fear to paralyze his victims.

Fear is one of Satan's most effective weapons. He uses fear to paralyze us, and causes us to fall short of our full position in Christ. The enemy uses fear to cause us to doubt the Promise of God, the People of God, and the Plan of God. The Bible says in 2nd Timothy 1: 7, "God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, love and a sound mind."

A crying child wanted to get into his parents bed after a bad dream. When his mother said "No," he asked, "Can I sleep with daddy?” His mother said, "Daddy is sleeping with me.” The little boy said, "Big sissy!"

What are we fearful of today? What has created doubt in our mind? What are our worries?

I read a story where there was a peasant, driving into a European city, who was call over by an aged woman. As they drove along, the peasant became alarmed as he learned his passenger had the plague, cholera. However, she assured him that only ten people in the city would die of cholera. She even offered the peasant a dagger, saying he could slay her if more than ten people died. Nevertheless, after they reached the city, more than a hundred perished. As the angry peasant drew the dagger to deal a death blow, the woman lifted her hand and protested and said, "Wait, the plague killed only ten people. Fear killed all the rest!"

Fear may not be a killer physically, but it has killed many people spiritually. It appears that when fear moves in; faith moves out; and, the Heavenly Father seems to us to be light years away.

EXPLANATION

PRAYER OVERTAKES THE SITUATION!

Jehosophat got up one morning, walked outside and got word that a 3 – to – 1 army was headed his way. He didn't know what to do. His prospects didn’t look so good, but to him prayer looked very good right about now. Jehosophat's prayer is one of my favorite prayers in the Bible.

HE PRAYED FOCUSED ON THE PERSON OF GOD

v.12, "Our eyes are upon Thee."

IN HIS PRAYER WE SEE THE NATURE OF GOD THAT IS MAJESTIC

No doubt Judas instigated their doubt and indignation. In verses 6-7 Jehosophat prayed "And said, O LORD God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? In addition, rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? In addition, in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee? 7 Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend forever?" I love how Jehosophat approaches God. He says, "We know what you did for our fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The God of our fathers was more than enough, but he says in verse 6, "Art not thou God in heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen?"

Charles Spurgeon told of how during an earthquake, the inhabitants of a small village were very much alarmed. There was a lady in the village that surprised everyone with her calmness and even the joy she expressed. One asked her, "Are you not afraid?" She replied, "No, I rejoice to know that I have a God who can shake the world."

In verse 7 Jehosophat prayed, "Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend forever?" We have a God that can shake the world He created and controls.

IN HIS PRAYER WE SEE THE NAME OF GOD THAT IS MIGHTY

It says in verses 8 and 9, "And they dwelt therein, and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name, saying, If, when evil cometh upon us, as the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we stand before this house, and in thy presence, (for thy name is in this house,) and cry unto thee in our affliction, then thou wilt hear and help.” I love the phrase, "For thy name is in this house."

C. J. Rolls writes, "This blessed name is like honey to the taste, harmony to the ear, health to the soul and hope to the heart. When we attempt to tabulate the treasure, with the weight of wealth, the value of virtue, the measure of merit, and to estimate the excellence, price the perfection, and calculate the comfort contained in His name, we are astounded at the riches of grace and riches of glory that therein reside. Is not the name Jesus a pearl from paradise and a gem from the glory land? Is it not a sapphire from the heavenly sanctuary of the Most High? To an indefinable degree, the name enhances the harp of hope, engraves the jewels of joy, embellishes the vessels of virtue, endears the mansions of memories, and ennobles the sweetest of songs. Jesus still stands loftiest in renown, He soars highest in rank, and sits chiefest in rule, governing in the power of an endless life, enthroned a Priest forever."

The Bible says in Proverbs 18:10, "The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe." As believers, we go with the name of the Lord, for we go IN the strength of the Lord; and IN the name of the Lord.

I came across a website for the Royal Telephone Company in Royal, Iowa. The website stated that the Royal Telephone Company had been in business since 1911. Their motto is, "Connecting you to the future." Then the page gives you a telephone number followed by the words, "The Answering Machine is checked on weekends and holidays. Be sure to leave a message."

Praise God when we go to God in prayer we have a royal telephone where we get an answering machine or have to leave a message. We never get a busy signal and we never call and no one answers. As the old song says: “Telephone to glory, oh, what joy divine! I can feel the current moving on the line, built by God the Father for His loved and own; we may talk to Jesus through the royal telephone.”

I love the song we recently sang at our revival meeting at my home church – Union Grove Baptist Church.

“I must tell Jesus all of my trials. I cannot bear these burdens alone: In my distress He kindly will help me, H always loves and cares for His own.”

“I must tell Jess all of my troubles; He is a kind, compassionate friend. If I but ask Him, He will deliver Make of my troubles quickly an end.”

“Tempted and tried, I need a great Savior, One who can help my burdens to bear; I must tell Jesus, I must tell Jesus, He all my cares and sorrows will share.

“O how the world of evil allures me! O how my heart is tempted to sin! I must tell Jesus, and He will help me over the world the victory win.”

---“I must tell Jesus! I must tell Jesus! I cannot bear my burdens alone; I must tell Jesus! I must tell Jesus! I must tell Jesus! Jesus can help me, Jesus alone.” ---

What do we do when we don't know what to do? Take it to Jesus and tell it to Jesus through the royal telephone of prayer. That's what Jehosophat did, and that's what we should do. He focused on the person of God, then he:

HE PRAYED FASTENED TO THE PROMISE OF GOD

Jehosophat admits that he doesn't know what to do. I love his honesty and humility.

In verse 12 he said, "We have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee." He takes it to God and tells it to God in prayer. While he focused on the person of God he fastens to the promise of God. God responds to Jehosophat's desperation.

GOD TELLS HIM TO STAND SURE

We read in verse 15, "Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's."

Every time I read those words I want to shout! God said to Jehoshaphat, "You may not know what to do, but I do, and I will take care of the problem. Don't be dismayed. You just stand back and watch me go to work! This battle is not yours. It is Mine!"

That thing that has sunk its claws of fear and doubt into us is not necessary because it is not our fight to fight; it's God's fight to fight! Sometimes we show up at the wrong fight against the wrong foe on the wrong battlefield. THE BATTLE IS THE LORD'S! Whatever is wrong we have to realize that we can't fix it, but God can? We can't solve it, but God can. We can't work it out, but God can. We can't turn it around, but God can. We just need to let God be God and stand sure on His promise.

GOD TELLS HIM TO STAND STILL

We read in verse 17, "Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them: for the LORD will be with you."

God doesn't tell Jehosophat to restock his arsenal of machine guns, oozies, mortar rockets, or B-52 bombers. He simply tells him to stand sure and stand still and watch God work. The Bible says that "the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds.” We can't fight a spiritual battle with carnal weapons. We don't need any weapons, because the Bible says, “IF GOD BE FOR US, WHO CAN BE AGAINST US?”

Armed with the promise of God, Jehosophat tells the people in verse 20, "Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper." Jehosophat fastens to the promise of God. He didn't have weapons, he didn't have a war strategy; all he had was a promise from God, but that's all he needed. So what do we do when we don't know what to do? We let our perspective oversee the situation, and then we let our prayer overtake the situation.

PERSPECTIVE OVERSEES THE SITUATION!

PRAYER OVERTAKES THE SITUATION!

PRAISE OVERCOMES THE SITUATION!

That which began as a time of sadness turned into a time a gladness. That which started with pity ended with praise. That which commenced in desperation concluded with celebration. Jehosophat got confirmation that God was with them, so instead of going into the war room he took the people to the worship room, and led them in praise to God.

NOTICE HOW THEY WORSHIPPED

Verses18 and 19 tell us, "And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD, worshipping the LORD. 19 And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high."

Verse 21 says, "And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth forever."

Jehosophat didn't put his mightiest soldiers on the front lines; he puts his best singers on the front line. That may say something of the importance of the choir and singers in our churches. Try to form a picture of this in your mind for a moment. There it was, early in the morning, Jehoshaphat called the people together, and he asked for the singers to come to the front along with the "Amen Section." He tells the singers, "Now when we begin to march toward the enemy, I want you to cut loose and sing the glory of God down. I want you to sing praises unto God like you have never sung praises to God before in your entire life. Now, I want the rest of you to cut loose just shouting “Praise the Lord” like a bunch of Spirit filled fanatics. We are going to do this, not to be seen by men and show off, but we are sincerely going to do this in order to bring Glory to God because He is worthy of all our praise!"

Jehosophat couldn't have been a Baptist or else he might have said, "Now, let's not get too carried away. Let's not get to emotional. Let's not act like wild people and undignified, let's be quiet, reserved and ritually reverent and act like normal dull, cold, Baptist. After all we have a reputation to maintain."

There Jehosophat is, armed with the promise of God, and they praise God on credit even before the first shot is fired. The battle wasn't theirs so it didn't call for worry; the battle was God His so it is a call to worship. God said, "I'm going to take care of this thing, and all I want you to do is build me a cheering section.”

NOTICE WHAT THEY WITNESSED

We are told in verse 22-24 2 Chronicles 20:22-24 (KJV) 22And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten. 23For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another.

24And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped.”

No shots were fired, no rockets were launched, no bombs were dropped, and no ammo was used. They fastened to God's promise and focused on God's praise and God took it out of their hands, put it in his hands and the rest was history. Jehosophat didn't fight. The Armies of Judah didn't fight. God didn't even fight. The enemies began to wipe one another out. When all the dust settled and the smoke cleared, they killed each other.

As if that wasn't enough, we are told in verse 25, "And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in gathering of the spoil, it was so much."

They did not have to raise a weapon, they did not have to throw a punch, they did not have to charge the enemy camp, and after their enemy had destroyed each other, God lets them walk right into the enemy camp and gave them so many spoils of victory it took them 3 days to gather it up.

APPLICATION

What do we do when we don't know what to do? We get the proper perspective. We give it to God in prayer. Then, we cut loose in praise to the God who has already won the victory.

The place where we mess up is when we allow our problem to become our platform or self-remedy! Then the problem gets so big that we can't see what God is doing or hear what God is saying; thus, the problem robs God of His praise and robs us of our prize!

What do we do when we don't want to do? We praise Him for what He has said. We praise Him for what He has done. We praise Him for what He's going to do! When we feel like pouting, that's the time for us to start shouting!

In Leonardo Da Vinci's famous painting of The Last Supper, our Lord's hands are empty. The emptiness of the Lord's hands in the painting contains an inspiring story. Da Vinci dedicated three years to this painting, determined that it would be his crowning work. Before the unveiling, he decided to show it to a friend for whose opinion he had the utmost respect. The friend's praise was unbounded. "The cup in Jesus' hand," he said, "is especially beautiful." Disappointed at once Da Vinci began to paint out the cup. Astonished, the distinguished friend asked for an explanation. Da Vinci explained, "Nothing must distract from the figure of Christ."

Even when we don't know what to do, we should never let anything take our eyes off of Jesus.

Amy Carmichael always knew she wanted to be a missionary. In 1895, she was commissioned by the Church of England Missionary Society to go to India where she spent the next 56 years without a furlough, sharing the love of Christ.

In 1932, Amy suffered a severe injury from a tragic accident. A band of Hindus dug a hole, outside her hut, into which she fell and was critically injured. She spent the next 19 years as an invalid, confined to her home. Yet, rather than becoming bitter, she said it was then that she saw the blessing behind the dark cloud. She entered into the fellowship of the suffering of Christ, for which she had prayed for many years. Amy Carmichael, the woman who gave her life as a missionary, two years before she died, as an invalid wrote:

“I refuse to be discouraged - To be sad, or to cry.

I refuse to be downhearted – And here's the reason why.

I have a God that's mighty – Who's sovereign and supreme,

I have a God who loves me, – And I am on His team.

He is all wise and powerful – Jesus is His name,

Though everything is changing – My God remains the same.

My God knows all that's happening, – Beginning to the end

His presence is my comfort, – He is my dearest friend.

When sickness comes to weaken me, – To bring my head down low.

I call upon my mighty friend – Into His arms I go.

When circumstances threaten – To rob me of my peace.

He draws me close into His breast – Where all my strivings cease.

When my heart melts within me – And weakness takes control.

He gathers me into His arms – He soothes my heart and soul.

The great "I Am" is with me - My life is in His hand

The "Son of God" is my hope – And in His strength I stand.

I refuse to be defeated – My eyes are on my God.

He has promised to be with me – As through this life I trod.

I'm looking past my troubles – To Heaven's throne above.

My prayers have reached the throne of God; – I'm resting in His love.

I give Him thanks in everything – My eyes are on His face.

The battle's His, the victory's mine – He'll help me win the race.”

What do we do when we don't know what to do? We let our perspective drive us to prayer and then onto praise. That will take our eyes off of what we don't know to do, and put our trust and faith in back the God who does know what to do, and will do if we give Him a chance to work all things out in His time and in His will for His purpose and praise as well as for our prize.
