Lesson 20:  Genesis 3:1-6 WHERE THE PROGRESSION OF SIN LEADS

 

Genesis 3:1-6 (KJV) "Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat."

 

INTRODUCTION:

 

Any time I preach on or about the Devil I always take to the Pulpit all my notes and any time I ever stand to teach on or about the Devil I do the same because if there is ever a time when he would try to block my mind or keep me from preaching or teaching everything God gives me to preach or teach, it is at that time. The Devil is very cunning and subtle and you can be sure that as I am preparing this Bible Study I have a very well documented supply of notes and resources at my disposal to make sure the subject is covered as well and accurately as I am capable in my humanly resources.

 

In beginning our journey in the book of Genesis we learn about many things for the first time and one of them is the being of all of heaven and earths troubles. Therefore, I would like to introduce to you this dastardly, demoniac, desperate, distasteful, disgusting, deceitful, devious, diabolical, excuse of a fallen angel that was once revered in the heavens and is now better known to us humans as the Devil or Satan. By way of introduction there are a few things we need to learn about him. Please let it be known to all without question that: Satan is a decided fact, Satan is a destructive force, but because of the virgin birth, the sinless life, the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ for our sins and His resurrection from the dead, Satan is a defeated foe. It important that we learn about Satan so that we will not be ignorant about him and his sly devises. Immediately as we see him on the pages of History we are amazed at several things.

 

Sometimes he appears in places where we would least expect to find him. Who would ever be looking for Satan in the Garden of Eden? He sometimes appears where we would least expect to find him. Satan can be found in almost every worship service. I believe Satan is more regular in worship attendance than some of the most faithful members. Any place you would expect to find blessings you can usually find the evidence of Satan. Any time you would expect to have a Godly experience there may be the aroma of Satan’s stench close by.

 

One time a preacher was preaching on the subject of the Devil and after the service a little boy said, "Pastor, when you were up there preaching, I could see the Devil just as plain as day!"

 

Sometimes he appears in forms that we would least expect to find him. For example, the Bible calls him "the serpent." However, ladies, don't get the idea of some slick, slithering, impulsive black snake. The word here for "serpent" is literally "the shinning one." This speaks of his beauty, and he was a glorious creature when he spoke with Eve. There was nothing about his appearance that would have caused Eve to be frightened at all. Actually, his original name was "Lucifer," which means "Light bearer or the son of the morning.” However "Lucifer, the son of the morning" became "Satan, the father of the night." However, in spite of all of that, he still seems to be able to transform himself as an angel of light. Don't get the idea that when you see the Devil that he's going to be wearing long red underwear with a pitch fork in his hand and horns on his head, saying boo! That is not the way the Bible describes the Devil and his appearances unto men. Many times he comes as an angel of light. Here he is described as "the shinning one," and we find out that he is a master of deception. Verse 1 says, "Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field..."

 

INTERPRETATION:

 

THE DEVIL IS A LIAR

 

The biggest liar in this county or any county is the Devil himself. Jesus describes the Devil in the Gospels. Speaking to some unsaved men, Jesus said in John 8:44 "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it." The Devil is the father of all lies. Jesus told us 2 things right here. The Devils motive is murder. The Devils method is the lie. The Devil wants to bring death to youth, to life, to purity, to peace, to happiness, to joy, and to holiness. The Devil wants to bring physical death, soulish death, eternal death, spiritual death, the first death, the second death. The Devil wants to bring death in the lake of fire that burns with brimstone. He wants to bring death because he is a death dealer! The Devil's motive is murder. The Devil's method is the lie. He must tell the lie to get his dirty work done. Suppose the Devil had told Eve the truth. Suppose the Devil had told Eve, "I want you to take of this forbidden fruit because I want to damn your soul. I want to ruin your family. I want to bring hate and war and crime and disease and heartache upon you and the whole human race you will produce. Eve, I want to curse the whole world through you!” Do you think Eve would have listened to him? Of course she wouldn't have listened to him. The only way he can get his dirty, devilish work done is through lying.

 

THE DEVIL IS A CLEAVER LIAR.

 

The Devil is never double-minded, but the Devil is always be double-tongued. The Devil has one purpose - to ruin the human race and in doing so insult Almighty God. The Devil is a cleaver liar and a cleaver liar can tell a lie that sounds more like the truth than a lie.

 

THE DEVIL IS A BIG LIAR.

 

He is a big liar who tells big lies about the biggest subject. What is the biggest subject? The biggest subject is God. In these opening pages in the book of Genesis you find the Devil lying about God and slandering His character. The Devil knows that if he can get us thinking wrongly about God then he has us right where he wants us. If the Devil can get you fearing God, running from God, disbelieving God, he can do almost anything with you. The Devil had rather get you to believe a wrong thing and think a wrong thing than to do a wrong thing any day. As the saying goes: “If you sow a thought, you reap a deed. If you sow a deed, you reap a habit. If you sow a habit, you reap a character. If you sow a character, you reap a destiny.” It all begins with a thought, and if the thought is wrong then the destiny will be wrong.  So the Devil comes here, crawling onto the pages of history here in the 3 Chapter of Genesis ushering in sin into the Garden of Eden. 

 

As I attempt to explain SIN’S PROGRESSION I want you to see something here that I hope will keep you walking and following the Lord Jesus Christ as closely as possible.

 

EXPLANATION:

 

SIN'S PROGRESSION LEADS TO DIALOGUE.

 

Notice the dialogue in Genesis 3:1-2  "Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:"

 

The serpent and the woman are carrying on a dialogue, or they are carrying on a discussion. Now what business did Eve have getting into a conversation with the Devil anyway? That was her first mistake. When the Devil came and confronted Eve, the very first thing she should have done was to declare the Word of God, point the Devil to the Word of God, and leave him right there. That is exactly what Jesus did when the Devil came to Him there in the wilderness and He said, "It is written,” “It is written,” “It is written." Three times, Jesus ran the Devil threw with that sharp sword of the Word of God. However, Eve didn't do that, instead she carries on a discussion with him. Eve was opening her mind to a discussion with the Devil. Someone has well said, "We cannot keep the birds from flying over our heads, but we sure can keep them from making a nest in our hair." Eve allowed the Devil come and make a nest in her hair. She was allowing him carry on a conversation with her. There will be people that will come to your home on their bicycles with their black ties and white shirts, or there will be others who will come up to you in the mall or the air-port with roses that will be pedaling false doctrine or someone respectable person will drive up to your home or walk up in your yard wanting to talk to you about the Bible plus their other book of false religion and they will want you to dialogue with them. Let me give you some advice! DON'T DO IT! DON'T GIVE THE DEVIL A PLACE FOR DIALOGUE! Even if you think you are well studied and learned in the Scriptures – DON’T DIALOGUE WITH THE DEVIL!

 

SIN'S PROGRESSION LEADS TO DOUBT.

 

Look at the doubt he presents to Eve in Gen 3:1 "Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said…"

 

Can't you just hear the sneer of the Devil in that? Can't you just hear the seeds of doubt in that?  The Devil did not say that God had not said, he just put a question mark after the Word of God. Folks, in these last days we are in there are those who claim to be Christians who are following the course of the Devil by putting a question mark after the Word of God! Today there are some who are questioning the authorship of the Bible. There are some who are questioning the accuracy of the Bible. There are some who are questioning the authority of the Bible. There are some are questioning the acceptability of the Bible. I know what I am about to say is not going to sit well with this modern day sect and society but I care not because your soul is worth more than modern day correctness and acceptability and opinion. Anybody - anywhere that puts a question mark after the Word of God – (any part of the Bible) – or try to water the Bible down to make it acceptable and pleasing to everyone, or try to twist or spin the truth so that everyone has a feel good experience no matter how sinful their deeds are is an representative of the Devil! Anybody who caused any kind of doubt or compromise about the Word of God is doing the Devil's work. The Devil knows that if he can get you doubting and compromising, then he has already started a work in you. I want you to know that trying to serve the Lord with doubt in your mind and compromise in your life and living is like trying to drive your automobile with all the brakes on. If the Devil has already planted seeds of doubts in your mind concerning the Word of God and you have begun compromising what you know is right and God’s will, I want to encourage you to honestly bring those doubts and compromises to Jesus Christ and confess them to Him and ask Him to help you to repent and turn your heart back toward heaven and close your ears to the words of Satan and his words of doubt.

 

SIN’S PROGRESSION LEADS TO DENIAL.

 

Notice the denial the devil presents to Eve in Gen 3:2-4 "And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3  But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4  And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die…"   

 

"Ye shall not surely die" Now here is an open and plain denial that the Word of God is not true. First there was DIALOGUE which turned into DOUBT, and then at just the right moment there came DENIAL. The Devil just denies that God is going to punish Eve's sin. Do you know what The Devil's Gospel is? You can sin with freedom and God will not punish sin. But folks let me assure you that "The wages of sin is death" and "The soul that sinneth shall surely die" and "Be sure your sin will find you out." If you can show me anytime, anyplace, anywhere, when anybody ever sinned, and got away with that sin I'll close my Bible and never preach or teach again. "Be sure you sin will find you out!" There are people today who are telling us that "God is not going to punish sin, He's too good to do that!" Nevertheless, friends, that is exactly backward because "God is too good not to punish sin." It is God's goodness, God's righteousness, God holiness that says that all sin must be punished. "The wages of sin is death!" We have people today who try to take the concept of punishment and hell out of the Bible. In our society today, if the Supreme Court of the USA could vote on it, they would outlaw hell as cruel and unusual punishment. Our White House would say, "That's un-American, God can't do that!" Nevertheless, regardless of what the Devil says about it, sin and punishment are inseparably linked. Law without penalty is only advise, and God wasn't giving advice. God has His holy laws and they cannot be broken without a consequence. No matter what anyone says about hell, they are not going to be able to change one jot or one tittle of the Word of God. Let God's Word be true and every man a liar. 

 

SINS PROGRESSION LEADS TO DECEPTION.

 

Notice the Devils deception in Gen 3:5, "For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil."  

 

The Devil was saying, "Eve, if you are no longer worried about God punishing your sins, let me tell you something even more exciting. Did you know that you can become your own god? Did you know that you can now live your life independent of God? Eve, I'm going to liberate you and you're going to be the first truly liberated woman on earth! You don't have to conform to the Word of God. Eve, if you will just experiment, then your eyes will be opened and you will know the difference between good and evil and you can make up your own mind. Eve you can form your own opinion, regardless of what the Word of God says. You have a right to make up your own mind!" 

 

It seemed so reasonable and logical that no longer would she need to submit to some other external authority because she could be her own little, cheap, self-made God. When an individual gets the deception that they can live their lives apart from God and apart from the Word of God - THAT MY FRIENDS IS SIN. Now let me point out here that the Devil was not trying to get Eve to do something gross or repulsive. This temptation was in the realm of religion because he was trying to get Eve to commit a spiritual sin. He wasn't trying to get Eve to be a Devil outwardly, but he was trying to get Eve to be a God. He was not tempting her trying to get her to fall down, but he was tempting her to try and fall up. The Devil just wanted Eve to be her own person. Believe it or not the Devil is not interested in getting a person to commit the grosser sins of the flesh. Sometimes you might see an old drunk in the gutter covered with puke and flies and you might say, "Oh look what the Devil did to that man." However, the Devil didn't do that, that man did that to himself. Sometimes you might see some woman who has become the castaway plaything of some wicked men and you might say, "Oh look what the Devil did to her." However, the Devil didn't do that, that woman did that to herself. I believe the Devil is kind of ashamed of those kind of people. I believe there are some folks that live in such a way that it even embarrasses the Devil. If the Devil had his way he wouldn't want anyone living that way. The Devil wants a person to put on a nice suit and tie, or put on a beautiful dress and carry a little Bible and he wants you to go to church and sit on the pew and smile and just look so religious and live your own life without God. The Devil had much rather send you to hell from a church pew or a religious gathering or a Bible Study than he had from the gutter any time. You see, the Devil had rather have you to be a person of distinction, rather than for you to be an old drunkard or a harlot because that way you're better advertisement for him. I believe the Devil is ashamed of some of these folks because they are destroying their lives all by themselves. Jesus said in Mat 15:19-20 "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man:" I've got news for you friend, if the Devil were to suddenly die, some people would just go right on sinning all by themselves. You see, Sin is an inside job!

 

There was a little girl who hit her brother with a broomstick, called him a bad name, and spit on him. The mother got after her and said, "Sweet heart the Devil made you do that." The little girl said, "Well the Devil may have made me hit him with a broomstick and call him a bad name, but spitting on him was my idea."

 

I'm not saying that the Devil doesn't want people to sin because he does. Nevertheless, I believe the Devil had rather a person to be a little better advertisement for him than some are and just act real religious and live without God. So here is the deception of sin, she just actually got it into her mind that she could live her life independently of God and she could be her own God, and she could make up her own mind about what is right and what is wrong. Even as some of you are reading this Bible Study or any given Bible Study, do you know what the Devil is out there trying to tell people in their subconscious mind? Some of you sit out there and read and study and try to think about what is being said. The Devil tells you to remember that the bar of judgment is your mind, not the Book he is teaching out of. You can make up your own mind and you can form your own conclusions. You don't have to do what he says you ought to do. Your religion, your tradition, your family, your history, your good deeds, your reputation is all you need and it is all your own personal and private business. After all, who is he to be telling you about spiritual things? You can just decide for yourself. Folks I want to tell you that the Devil is alive and well and he is still at work even where you are sitting right now. The fact that he is alive and well is evidenced in the fact that there are so many who don't want to submit to the authority of the Word of God. There are some would even challenge and second guess the teaching of the God called man of God.

 

SINS PROGRESSION LEADS TO DESIRE.

 

Notice Eve's desire in Gen 3:6 "And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof,"

 

Therefore, her deception turned into a desire and this time it is a perverted desire because she has the idea that now she can chose what she wants. She desires what God had forbidden. God said, "Here is the tree in the midst of the Garden, ye shalt not eat of it, in the day that you do ye shall surly die." However, Eve looked at it and it looked so beautiful. She sees that it is good for food. She sees that it is beautiful to look at. She sees it is suppose to make her intellectually superior and spiritually knowledgeable so she partakes. In doing so she illustrates what 1 John says, "All that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father but of the world." What got to Eve was this: the lust of the flesh, it was good for food, the lust of the eyes, it was pleasant to look at, and the pride of life, the desire to make one wiser. The lust of the flesh is in the realm of doing. The lust of the eyes is in the realm of having. The pride of life is in the realm of being. Sometimes we get into trouble because we want to do, have, or be the wrong things.

 

Let me tell you something about how to deal with temptation. What the Devil does is this: he tries to find a God-given desire in your heart and then he tries to pervert that desire. The Devil has no raw material with which to work because God made everything and so the only thing the Devil can do is to take what God has already made and twist it and pervert it. Therefore, what the Devil does is find a normal, natural, God-given desire and drive and perverts it. For example, the desire for food is normal but gluttony is a perversion. The desire for rest is normal but laziness is a perversion. The desire for sex is normal but adultery is a perversion. The Devil is the original pervert and he is a perverter!

 

Here is the way to deal with the temptation. Find the area in which you are tempted and find out what is God's legitimate fulfillment for that legitimate drive and desire, and then fulfill it legitimately. When you do that, then you don't have an itch the Devil can scratch.

1. In the matter of doing, what greater thing could you do than to serve God?

2. In the matter of having, what greater thing could you have than the riches of Christ? 

3. In the matter of being, what greater thing could you be than to be a child of God?

When you understand what God wants, then your desires are not perverted and twisted.

 

APPLICATION:

 

SIN’S PROGRESSION LEADS TO DECISION.

 

Notice Eve's decision in Gen 3:6  "And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat,"

 

Eve made a decision and it was her decision, nobody made that decision for her. Later on she tried to say, "The Devil made me do it" but God wouldn't buy that because she did it all by herself. Now we know the Devil tempted her, and we know the Devil deceived her, but it was really her own fault. There are not enough demons in hell or out of hell to make you deny the Lord. God will not allow your will to be freely overcome by the Devil. God will not coerce you and God will not allow the Devil to coerce you. When God made you, He made you in His image and God gave you a will.

 

Every time I Preach, and at the end of every Bible Study I give a Gospel invitation for people to accept and acknowledge the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal and then go to a Christian Church of choice and talk with the Pastor and receive God given advise about what to do next. However, when I do that The Devil will whisper in the ears of many, a thousand excuses for not doing that. Nevertheless, I want you to know there are not enough Demons in hell or out of hell to keep a person from going to Jesus if that person wants to do that. I'm going to be praying that the Holy Spirit will convict of sin. I am going to be praying that God the Holy Spirit, who is speaking through me, is going to be speaking to the heart and inviting people to go to Jesus in prayer and seek Him. God has given each of us a will just like He gave Eve a will and it was Eve's choice when she took, and she ate.

 

The moment she made her decision to disobey God, she became a slave to her sin. In John 8:34 Jesus said, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin." The choice that Eve made became a chain that bound her but it was her decision and she made it all by herself. From the moment Eve chose wrong, she then became the servant of sin and the slave of Satan. There are so many today who are slaves of sin and when the Devil says jump they say how high. Oh, there are those who say they are free, and they are free, but they are free to do what they want and they are not free to do what they ought because they are the slave of Satan and the servant of sin. Only Jesus can make a person free to do what they ought.

 

SIN’S PROGRESSION LEADS TO DEATH.

 

The Bible says "she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat,"  I want you to look back at Gen 2:17  "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." 

 

Her decision turned to death. However, wait a minute, the Bible goes on to say how she had a family and she spoke with Adam and so forth, it seems like she is still alive. Friends, the day Eve made that wrong decision, Eve died spiritually. In the Bible death is not primarily separation of the soul from the body, but while the heart is still beating, death is also the separation of the Spirit from God. She died immediately in the Spirit. She died progressively in the soul. She died ultimately in the body. Nevertheless, she was dead spiritually the moment she ate. She died spiritually because she was cut off from God and from that moment on she lost her fellowship with God. The Bible says concerning our Lord, "In Him was life and the life was the light of man." So when Eve sinned she died, God moved out of her, and when the Lord went out the life went out, and when the life went out the light went out. There she is, dead, darkened, depraved, and doomed because now sin has come to full fruit in her life. Her deception became a desire which became her death.

 

SIN'S PROGRESSION LEADS TO DISTRIBUTION.

 

Gen 3:6  “And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.” 

 

The death turned into a DISTRIBUTION because she spreads it on to her husband. You know dead things corrupt the things around it don't they? Here is her corrupting influence and as a sinner she becomes a seducer. There is an unholy contagion to sin. Not only has she done wrong but now here she is dragging Adam in with her. Now the Devil has a team member, now the Devil has someone to help him to do his dirty perversion work. Now Adam has become a sinner because Eve is now distributing the views of the Devil.

 

Friends let me give you something to think about: if you go to heaven, you will hopefully and most likely take someone with you through the influence you have had upon them in this life. However, if you go to hell, you will most likely take someone with you through the influence you have had upon them in this life as well. The Bible says that "None of us live unto ourselves and none of us die unto ourselves." Eve not only corrupted herself but she became the Devil's tool to corrupt Adam.

 

There are most likely some of you who are not Christians. I am not threatening you but I do want to warn you that if you have not believed in Jesus Christ the only Son of God as your personal Savior and Lord and if you do not get saved before you die you are going to go to hell. Furthermore, I want to warn you that most likely you are going to take some of your loved ones with you, and it may even be your own children whom you love so dearly. There is something about sin that corrupts those around us. There is something about the sin in a sinner that makes the sinner a seducer. I believe the hell of hell for some men and women will not only be that they died without Jesus and went to everlasting hell themselves but to realize that they drug their wife or husband or children or other loved ones there with them.

Boy that would be a bad note to end on wouldn't it?

 

INVITATION:

 

In Romans 5:12 is what the New Testament has to say about all we have been talking about, "Wherefore, as by one man [ that is Adam] sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:" There is none of us who would dare stand up and say we have not sinned. The Bible says, "Death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:"

 

Death came into the world through Adam but we are all sinners by nature, birth, choice, and practice and we are sinners unto the condemnation of death. But in Romans 5:17 it says "For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; [that is by Adam] much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, [Jesus Christ."] 

 

Now what does that tell us? It tells us that Jesus came to undo what Adam did. The glory of the Gospel is that you gain more in Jesus than you ever lost in Adam. That's what the Bible means when it says, "Where sin did abound, grace doth much more abound." It is better to be a saved sinner than to be an innocent angel. Did you know that?

 

Adam had natural life, but AS A CHRISTIAN - I have supernatural life in Christ.

Adam was merely innocent, but AS A CHRISTIAN - I am positively righteous in Christ.

Adam lived in an earthly paradise, but AS A CHRISTIAN - I am seated in heavenly places with Christ. 

Adam was the lord of Eden, but AS A CHRISTIAN - I am the heir of all things with Christ.

Adam was God's creature, but AS A CHRISTIAN - I am a member of the Body of Christ.

Adam was able to fall, but AS A CHRISTIAN - I am eternally secure in Christ.

Adam may have been happy, but AS A CHRISTIAN - I am full of glory through Christ.

Jesus came into my life, and now AS A CHRISTIAN - I have joy unspeakable.

 

In order to undo what the Devil did God provided what the Bible calls a free gift of grace and forgiveness to those who will receive it by faith. WITH GOD’S HELP THROUGH THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT YOU CAN STOP SIN’S PROGRESSION IN YOUR LIFE.

ALWAYS REMEMBER!

The support of your local Church ministry and the ministry of your Pastor should be the first priority of your Christian life and your service to the Lord. Be faithful to prayerfully prepare and attend Sunday School and Worship Service this Sunday and participate in worship as your Pastor preaches the Word. Do not forget to give the Lord at least your TITHE through your local church from your gross income – that is your first fruits. Any other other giving is an offering to a ministry unto the Lord. Honor the Lord in all you do and with all that you have. Always remember that everything you have and all you are belongs to the Lord. It is on loan to you – so manage it well! There will be an audit one day! Make sure the Books Balance!
